There exists a growing body
of evidence to suggest that the fisheries of the
Wakatobi are becoming overexploited and are currently
unsustainable. This has the consequence of threatening
the unique biodiversity of the area, whilst disrupting
and altering the way of life of thousands of people
dependent upon the resources of the sea. Increased
conservation management is required to save the
wonderful marine environment of these unique Islands;
but this is not possible without developing alternative,
realistic and lucrative income sources for local people
that place an incentive upon having a pristine
environment.
The authors of this website
believe that tourism is one of only a handful of
alternatives to the overexploitation of the seas
resources. This website intends to help facilitate the
development of more small scale, ecologically friendly,
independent tourism within the national park that can
provide real incomes to local people. It is also the aim
of this site to provide a portal for information about
these islands, information pertinent to the long-term
conservation and management of the Wakatobi.
By no means do these authors
suggest that this website is a full authoritative
account of the national park and realise that many
people have a greater knowledge and expertise about
particular fields. This website encourages the
contribution of information from individuals, companies,
NGO's, government bodies and anyone involved with
living, working or just visiting the Wakatobi.
